When it comes to solar control, there are a lot of options. But what it really comes down to is one of these two basic choices: film or treatments.
Window treatments are one way to control the sun and heat problems. Products that fall under the category of window treatments are shades, blinds, shutters, curtains, drapes and anything else that you use to treat the area where the windows are located. They don’t attach or adhere to the windows themselves. Instead, they block or filter sunlight that enters through the windows.
Window film, on the other hand, adheres directly to the inside surface of the windows. The main idea behind window film is to filter and block sunlight before it enters the building.
When deciding which option is best for you, ask yourself these 3 questions:
Question #1 – How much do you like your view?
One factor to consider when selecting between window treatments and window films is what is on the other side of those windows. Is there a view that you would like to see? Hopefully you’re not looking out your windows to see another tall building right next door. If so, the building would already be blocking the sun.
If you have a nice view out of your windows, most likely you would like to see it. Window treatments filter or block out the sunlight altogether and obstruct your view. Window film filters out the solar heat and UV rays before the sun ever enters the building, cutting down on up to 80% of the solar heat that enters through the windows. In addition, by reducing glare, your eyes can focus easier, avoid straining &/or squinting to see out the windows. The result is a view that appears in ultra-high definition just by controlling the sun.
If you have a view, window film is the way to go.
Question #2 – What is the difference in cost?
Cost is definitely a big factor for most homeowners and business owners. While some shades can be inexpensive, most window treatments are more expensive than installing window film. Window film prevents heat from entering the building in the first place, which means you don’t have to run your air conditioning units nearly as often. As mentioned earlier, window tinting films can reduce up to 80% of solar heat, as well as up to 99% of harmful ultraviolet rays. This equates to less heat getting inside and your air-conditioning run less often.
Not only will this save you money on air-conditioning costs, a direct reflection of your energy bill, but window film also cuts down on maintenance, repair costs and extends the life of your air-conditioning units.
If you want to save money, window film typically saves more money in the long run.
Question #3- Is a combination of film and blinds the best of both worlds?
It’s important to consider a hybrid option of both window film and treatments. Window film can cut down on solar heat, as well as improve the view while blinds are very useful when it comes to privacy.
